Mum, where do fonts come from?

Good question.

Usually, when a designer and their pen love each other very much, they come together for a special cuddle in a few months or even years - baby fonts come out!

Letterform making is the process of designing individual letterforms, or the shapes that make up each letter of a typeface. This includes the design of each letter's stroke weight, serifs, and other distinctive features that make it recognizable.

Font creation involves the creation of an entire typeface, including all of its letterforms, punctuation marks, and other symbols.

There are many factors to consider when creating a font, including legibility, readability, and overall style. Plus having a catchy if not slightly abstract name like Kylie's Citrus Revenge, that alludes to a bad breakup.

Fonts can be designed to convey a wide range of moods and emotions, from playful and whimsical to serious and professional.

The process of font creation is a genuine craft...some say art. It is time-consuming and requires a great deal of attention to detail, as each individual letterform must be carefully crafted to ensure that it looks good in a variety of contexts and at different sizes.

Not all fonts are the same. Many are cheap and free, but the best are made in a foundry, cost more than a holiday to Thailand and are beautiful to look at and work with.
